Dharma Productions has just dropped the official trailer for its most daring film to date, Homebound, with a moving caption: “Presenting a piece of our heart, hoping it finds a home in yours.” Set for a September 26, 2025 theatrical release, the trailer instantly struck a chord—both for its emotional intensity and its bold subject matter.

Directed by Neeraj Ghaywan, the acclaimed filmmaker behind Masaan, Homebound is an adaptation of a 2020 New York Times article that delves into the complexities of caste and religious tensions in India—an area rarely explored in mainstream Hindi cinema. Starring Ishaan Khatter, Vishal Jethwa, and Janhvi Kapoor, the film follows two childhood friends from oppressed backgrounds, fighting against systemic discrimination while chasing their dream of becoming police officers.

The trailer teases a powerful blend of raw storytelling, subtle romance, and harsh realism, all backed by a haunting score and piercing visuals. The film garnered a nine-minute standing ovation at Cannes 2025, signaling not only critical acclaim but also a growing international appetite for socially rooted Indian narratives. Adding global heft is Martin Scorsese, who joins the project as an executive producer, giving it a powerful stamp of prestige and intent.

What sets Homebound apart is its refusal to sugarcoat reality. Drawing on 2021 NCRB data, which reports over 40,000 lives lost annually to caste-based violence, the film doesn't just dramatize injustice—it demands that viewers reckon with it. The screenplay, penned by a team including Sumit Roy, Varun Grover, and Basharat Peer, ensures authenticity and depth, while the supporting team, including Apoorva Mehta, Karan Johar, Adar Poonawalla, and Melita Toscan Du Plantier, gives the film both artistic and commercial backing.

Homebound is not just a film—it’s a statement. At a time when Indian cinema is increasingly balancing spectacle with substance, this one dares to confront what lies beneath the surface. It’s not just about going home—it’s about who gets to call a place home, and at what cost.
